Biobest: Pest-Free Crops and innovative Powdery Mildew Control in Cannabis

Home / News / Biobest: Pest-Free Crops and innovative Powdery Mildew Control in Cannabis

Born in 1987 with a passion for bumblebee pollination, Biobest has grown from a humble Belgian company to a global leader in biological crop protection. A division of the BioFirst Group, we empower growers worldwide to produce crops sustainably through natural pollination, beneficial insects and mites, advanced scouting and monitoring systems, biopesticides, biostimulants, biofertilizers, and inoculants.

Now, we are taking innovation even further as part of the Cultivation for Compounds (CfC) initiative – a growing consortium of international industry partners dedicated to raising the bar in top-quality cannabis cultivation.

Biological Control a self-evident choice in Cannabis

In line with the Cultivation for Compounds initiative, we introduce natural enemies in a preventive approach to manage pest infestations before they occur. Our most trusted allies include:

  • For spider mite control: The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis and the gall midge Feltiella acarisuga
  • To control aphids and whiteflies: The Parasitic wasps Aphidius ervi, Encarsia formosa, and Eretmocerus eremicus
  • To manage sciarid flies and thrips pupae: The nematodes Steinernema feltiae and the predatory miteStratiolaelaps scimitus
  • For controlling thrips larvae and adults: The predatory bug Orius laevigatus

Innovative Disease Control: Focus on Powdery Mildew

Biobest excels not only in pest control but also in tackling plant diseases. In the Cultivation for Compounds project, the primary challenges are powdery mildew and Botrytis. While we believe that Botrytis can be effectively managed through improved crop management practices — thanks to our partners — we see powdery mildew control as the next frontier. This is why we have committed three years of dedicated research to test innovative solutions for controlling powdery mildew in cannabis crops.

We are committed to enabling major advances in the development of biological control in the cannabis industry and we can’t wait to try them at field level to the benefit of our partners and customers worldwide.
