Buffalo Extraction Systems (or in short, BES) is an agro-processing company focused on automation, drying, and extraction technology. The company was originally American but was acquired by the Indian company Cybernetik, a great addition to their GxP portfolio. Buffalo Extraction Systems builds turnkey solutions for the post-harvest side of cannabis. They are also active in the spice and essential oil markets with clients in India and Indonesia. Currently, they have their solutions producing dried flowers, crude oils, extracts, and distillates in the US, Colombia, South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Thailand, and North Macedonia. Now, these globe-trotters are expanding their reach into Europe, as the timing is right to strengthen the medicinal market.
We interviewed Yogesh Jhamtani, the CEO of Buffalo Extraction Systems. We asked him about some of the benefits of turning floral biomass into various products like cannabinoid distillates and oils. Yogesh explained that the value chain of the cannabis industry closely resembles that of other medical markets. Meaning that the market is controlled based on the chemical content of the products. The specific flower market knows ups and downs, mostly related to new markets opening up and the associated rush of new growing operations. However, as markets mature, this outlook changes.
Yogesh continued, “When looking at the end-product level, we should look at isolates, distillates, and crude oils more like a raw product, as they can be refined further. In the EU-GMP market, there is a lot of demand for distillates to turn into medicine or novel products. This makes these products more interesting and sustainable for long-term partnerships”.
Next, we asked Yogesh how he wants Buffalo Extraction Systems to be positioned in the industry. Yogesh: “Our vision is to enable agro-processing to get the maximum value from plants using CO2-related extraction technologies. We want to provide the best solutions to our clients and service them at every technological point”. Buffalo Extraction Systems’ core competency is the design of the extraction facility. From the concept to the workflow, including GMP nuances, they have the knowledge in-house. The company takes pride in connecting all the dots for its customers, whether it is drying, extraction, winterization, crystallization, or any other steps. ”Once the right technology is chosen, there should not be any worries about running a smooth operation”.
When asked why Buffalo Extraction Systems joined CfC, Yogesh explained: “CfC is a consortium of reliable companies with a similar ethos regarding value creation for our customers. Buffalo Extraction Systems aims to create ecosystems in cannabis”. An ecosystem is a collaboration between partners that complement each other, and therefore add value for the client. The ultimate goal is to form a one-stop shop for all entrepreneurs that could use our help. Or as Yogesh puts it: “We wanted to be part of something bigger, truly enable the EU-cannabis industry”.
Recently, BES Labs was launched. A platform in India, aimed to promote agro-processing on a local scale. Yogesh shared, “We went live earlier this year. We work on different crops, like algae, ginger, curcuma, and coffee. Our vision is to process the products further and improve the economic situation of the local producers. The platform is designed to be low-entry so that entrepreneurs can develop new products using our R&D facilities”.
We concluded the interview with a summary of Buffalo Extraction System’s vision for the industry. “The cannabis space is very exciting and we are building the foundations of a sustainable industry. We look forward to creating new partnerships and ecosystems. Our goal is to be responsible, to solve problems, and to create elements to take the full benefit from the plant. We will make it sustainable, as we are in it for the long run!”.
